Intel Could Add up Hardware Speed for Google’s WebM

Steve Jobs might be the only person who isn’t comfy with Google’s WebM video format, but Intel is definitely feeling cozy with the idea of working on the hardware acceleration aspects of the WebM.

The WebM is a newly created video format (still in the process of finalization) and Google has promised that its going to deliver High Definition visual content, online streaming to PCs and TV sets and an array of handheld devices. The VP8 codec is going to work as the backbone of WebM and this is why Steve Jobs was a little uneasy with it.

Intel has a pretty supportive stance on Google’s project and Wilfred Martis – General Manager at Intel said that we are going to deal with WebM in a similar manner as we treated other codecs like; MPEG2, H.264 and VC1 with unique perfection and craftsmanship.

Do bear in mind that Intel has also been working with Google and Logitech to bring out some dandy new TV sets, with WebTV support and HD content for all users. Google will obviously be providing the Android platform for the TVs and Intel and Logitech are going to develop those visuals, Atom Processors and remote controls.

This brings us to another crispy issue about Intel’s lack of displaying perfect graphics to its users. You do remember the Larrabee Display Chip project by Intel, right? Yep, the one that Intel just abandoned — and said that there were some “technical” difficulties. Well, if Intel hasn’t been able to finish “Larrabee” then how come they’ll contribute to the WebM project?
